Young Speechmaker Contest
Lions Clubs of New Zealand are proud to offer young people aged 16 to 21 (as at 15 November in the year of the competition) the chance to take part in our national public speaking contest.
Entry is free for contestants and open to the public through local Lions clubs. Competitions begin at district level, with winners progressing to the National Final held each August.
What is the Young Speechmaker Contest?
Each year, Lions Clubs of New Zealand invite youth aged 16–21 to take part in the Young Speechmaker Contest, a national competition designed to grow confidence, communication, and leadership skills.
How it works:
- Local Lions clubs contact schools and youth groups to sponsor speakers for the District Contest.
- All District contests are completed by 30 June.
- Up to three contestants from each District progress to the National (MD202) Final in August.
- Travel arrangements and venue details for the national final are coordinated by the NZ Lions Young Speechmaker Coordinator after 30 June.
Support & Participation:
We encourage families, friends, fellow students, and Lions members to attend and support contestants. The only cost for attendees is a small catering charge (around $15 for morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea). Contestants’ costs are covered by their sponsoring Lions club.
