NZ Lions Liver Transplant Fund
LMLCCT Designated Fund #16
Before 1989, all New Zealanders needing a liver transplant had to travel overseas — most often to Brisbane, but sometimes even further. Each procedure cost families around NZ$150,000, and Lions Clubs across the country regularly stepped in to fundraise for this life-saving treatment.
In the mid-1980s, following extensive research by PDG Kevin Wall QSO and with the support of the Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust (LMLCCT), Lions launched the largest fundraising project ever undertaken by Lions in New Zealand. The campaign raised an incredible $2.3 million.
In 1989, the New Zealand Liver Transplant Service opened at Auckland Hospital. At the same time, Lions also funded a three-unit Lions Transplant House, located across the road from the hospital, to provide accommodation for families travelling from outside Auckland.
Since then, all liver transplants for New Zealanders have been carried out locally. What began as about 10 transplants a year offshore has grown into a world-class service, with more than 818 liver transplants performed in New Zealand since 1989.
