Diabetes New Zealand
Diabetes is one of the most pressing public health challenges worldwide. According to the World Health Organisation, the number of people living with diabetes is expected to rise from 240 million to 456 million within the next 20 years.
New Zealand reflects this alarming trend, with more than 225,000 people currently diagnosed and around 50 new cases each day.
The impact of diabetes is wide-reaching. It can lead to serious health complications, affect families and communities, and place a significant burden on healthcare systems. Key challenges include identifying those with type 2 diabetes, preventing or delaying its onset, reducing complications for those already living with the condition, and ensuring access to comprehensive care.
Lions Clubs of New Zealand partner with Diabetes NZ to raise awareness, promote healthier lifestyles, and support communities through nationwide campaigns and local initiatives.
Our aims and objectives are to:
- Alert the public to the dangers of obesity, inactivity, and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- Increase awareness of both the causes of type 2 diabetes and the complications of diabetes in general.
- Help slow the rise in type 2 diabetes diagnoses and reduce the number of people experiencing serious complications.
Together, Lions and Diabetes NZ are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders.
